Jan Mot is participating in Art Basel Online Viewing Room: Pioneers with the presentation Seth Siegelaub: How is Art History Made? focusing on works by trailblazing artists who have been part of Seth Siegelaub’s projects: Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Rosemarie Castoro, Hanne Darboven, Douglas Huebler, Robert Huot, Joseph Kosuth, David Lamelas, Lawrence Weiner and Ian Wilson. Importantly, Koester's ruins avoid the ideological optimism of neo-conservative philosophers such as Francis Fukuyama who, in his famous book The End of History, sees modernity as having achieved its goal of universal freedom in the market-oriented liberal democracy of the USA. 51 On the contrary, Koester's ruins remind us of the instability of every social order, including neo-liberal ones Koester explores the labile borderline between consciousness and its various possible modifications--through trance in Tarantism, 2007, for instance, or through psychoactive drugs in The Hashish Club, 2009--and between reason and what escapes its control.
